Analogue Film Presets

The appeal of analogue photography is difficult to reduce to a single visual style. It can be found in the way negative film handles skin, the density of a transparency, the color shifts of an old scan or the subtle variations introduced during development and printing. For us, analogue photography is not defined by nostalgia alone. It is a history of materials, processes and visual decisions.

The Digital Darkroom develops Lightroom presets and profiles inspired by that history. Our analogue film presets are designed as practical tools for photographers who want to explore some of the visual relationships associated with film while retaining the flexibility of a contemporary digital workflow.

What makes a photograph feel analogue?

There is no single answer. Film stocks behave differently. Exposure changes the density and color of a negative. Development alters contrast and saturation. Scanning introduces another interpretation of the original material. Printing can change the image again.

What we eventually recognize as the "film look" is therefore the result of a chain of decisions. This is one reason analogue film presets can be useful in a digital workflow. They provide a way of introducing some of these relationships into a RAW photograph without locking the photographer into a fixed result.

Beyond grain

Grain is perhaps the most recognizable characteristic associated with analogue photography, but grain alone does not make a digital photograph feel like film. Color separation, tonal transitions, contrast and the relationship between highlights and shadows often have a much greater influence on the character of an image.

A convincing analogue-inspired treatment therefore needs to consider the photograph as a whole. We are interested in what happens when those relationships are changed together.

The beauty of variation

Analogue photography was never perfectly consistent. Different emulsions behaved differently. Exposure, chemistry, temperature, scanning and printing all introduced their own effects. This variation became part of photographic culture.

A digital workflow offers much greater control, but that does not mean every photograph needs to look perfectly controlled. Our analogue-inspired collections explore some of the visual space created by these variations: softer contrast, unusual color relationships, denser shadows, restrained saturation and shifts away from photographic neutrality.

From negative film to historic processes

Analogue photography encompasses far more than conventional color negative film. Vintage Analogue Film explores the character of negative film, scanned photographs and the variations introduced throughout the analogue process. Digital Portra looks toward the restrained color and tonal qualities associated with portrait negative film. Chroma takes inspiration from Kodachrome and its distinctive color relationships. Aero Infrared explores the radically different palette of infrared photography, while Cross Process and Dye Transfer draw on very different historical approaches to photographic color.

Each collection begins with a different photographic reference.

A digital darkroom

The purpose of a preset is not to recreate a physical process perfectly. A digital photograph is produced by a sensor, not an emulsion. Its RAW data behaves differently, and the final image is shaped by software rather than chemistry.

Instead, we use analogue photography as a source of ideas. A preset can suggest a particular color relationship, tonal structure or atmosphere. The photographer can then continue working with the image until the result belongs to the photograph.

Make the look your own

Presets are starting points. After applying a look, we recommend adjusting exposure and white balance before making smaller changes to contrast, saturation and color. Where a collection includes an adjustable profile, its strength can also be changed.

The intention is simple: to give the photograph a direction without deciding its destination.
