The Digital Darkroom is an independent photographic studio based in Sweden, created by a small group of photographers and image-makers with backgrounds in documentary photography, editorial work, filmmaking, books and exhibitions.

Our experience comes from more than two decades of working with photography in very different contexts and conditions, from long-term documentary projects and editorial assignments to personal work, publishing and film.

The Digital Darkroom grew from a shared interest in analogue photography and the physical processes that have shaped the photographic image: negative and transparency film, darkroom printing, photographic papers, scanning, grain and historic color processes.

Our presets and profiles are developed through extensive testing on many different kinds of photographs. We work with portraits, landscapes, interiors, artificial light, mixed lighting and difficult exposures, testing how a color treatment behaves as the conditions change. We want the tools to be useful beyond the small selection of images used to present them.

Some collections begin with the characteristics of a particular film stock. Others are informed by printing processes, darkroom techniques or a certain period in photographic history. Our interest is not limited to reproducing a specific film look as closely as possible. We are equally interested in understanding why certain photographic materials and processes produced such distinctive images, and how some of those qualities can be translated into a contemporary digital workflow.

The Digital Darkroom remains independent and is based in Sweden. We develop photographic tools for photographers who care about color, tone and the character of the final image, wherever they happen to work.
