Film Lightroom Presets

Film has never been simply about grain. Different films respond to light, color and exposure in different ways. Some produce restrained and natural color, others are known for saturation, contrast or unusual color relationships. The final photograph is also shaped by development, scanning, printing and the conditions under which it was made. This is where our approach to film Lightroom presets begins.

The Digital Darkroom creates Lightroom presets and profiles inspired by analogue film, photographic processes and the visual history of photography. Rather than applying a generic "film look", each collection explores a particular interpretation of color, tone and atmosphere. The intention is to give photographers a useful foundation for further editing while preserving the individual character of the photograph.

A different way of looking at digital photography

A RAW file is remarkably flexible. It gives the photographer control over almost every aspect of the image, but that flexibility can also leave the photograph without a clear visual direction. Film worked differently. The characteristics of the material were already part of the photographic process. The choice of film influenced the way colors separated, how highlights behaved, how shadows carried color and how a scene was ultimately translated into a photograph.

Film Lightroom presets can provide a similar starting point in a digital workflow. They do not turn a digital photograph into an analogue negative. Instead, they introduce a set of decisions about color, contrast and tone that can give the photograph a particular direction.

More than a film filter

The digital film aesthetic is often reduced to a few familiar adjustments: grain, faded blacks, warm highlights and reduced saturation. These can certainly be part of an analogue aesthetic, but they represent only a small part of what made different photographic materials visually distinct.

Our approach focuses more broadly on the relationships between colors and tones within the photograph. How does a red object sit against green foliage? What happens to skin when surrounding colors become more saturated? How much color can remain in a shadow before it begins to feel artificial? These relationships often have a greater influence on the character of an image than any single adjustment.

Different films, different possibilities

There is no single film look. Portrait film, transparency film, infrared materials and historic printing processes each produce very different results. Some approaches work particularly well with natural skin tones and documentary photography, while others are more suited to landscapes, fashion or experimental images.

The Digital Darkroom's collections reflect that variety. Digital Portra explores restrained color and natural tonal relationships. Chroma takes inspiration from the distinctive color character associated with Kodachrome. Aero Infrared moves into the strange false-color world of Aerochrome. Vintage Analogue Film explores the broader character of negative film and scanned photographs. Cross Process draws on the unpredictable color relationships created by unconventional development, while Dye Transfer looks toward one of the richest and most controlled color printing processes in photographic history.

A starting point for your own photographs

A preset is not intended to finish a photograph for you. Exposure, white balance, lighting and the colors already present in the image will influence the result. The same preset can therefore behave very differently on two photographs.

We recommend applying a look first and then adjusting it to the photograph. The preset establishes a direction. The photographer decides where to take it.

Designed for a digital workflow

Our presets are developed for photographers working with contemporary digital files while drawing on the history of analogue photography. We test them across portraits, landscapes, street photography, mixed lighting, deep shadows and strong daylight. The goal is not to create a preset that works identically on every photograph, but a useful photographic tool that retains its character while remaining flexible.
