Vintage Film Presets

Vintage photography is often associated with faded color, soft contrast and visible grain. Those characteristics can certainly suggest an older photograph, but the history of analogue photography is much broader.

Photographic materials have always changed, printing methods developed and photographers found different ways of interpreting color and light. The photographs left behind by these processes form a large and varied visual vocabulary. The Digital Darkroom draws on that vocabulary when developing vintage film Lightroom presets.

What makes an image feel old?

Sometimes it is color. Sometimes it is contrast, density, grain or the way shadows retain a trace of color. But sometimes the feeling comes from the relationship between all of these things. An old photograph is rarely the result of one adjustment. Its appearance may have been shaped by the film, exposure, development, scanning, paper, printing and the passage of time. Our approach is to look at these characteristics as a collection of photographic possibilities rather than as a fixed recipe.

Beyond the faded film look

The contemporary idea of a vintage preset often relies on a familiar formula: lifted blacks, warm highlights, low saturation and heavy grain. There is nothing wrong with that approach, but it represents only one small part of analogue photography. Some historical color processes produced remarkably strong and saturated images. Some transparency films were known for brilliant color and density. Other materials produced subtle and restrained photographs. Vintage does not necessarily mean muted.

Photographs with atmosphere

A vintage-inspired treatment can work particularly well when the photograph benefits from a less polished appearance. Documentary photographs, portraits, interiors and street scenes can sometimes gain atmosphere when the color becomes slightly less literal.

Small shifts can be enough. A green may become less neutral. Skin may become warmer or cooler. Shadows can retain color rather than becoming completely black. Contrast can be softened without losing structure. The result does not need to look old. It simply needs to feel less tied to the clinical neutrality of a modern digital file.

Your photograph comes first

No preset can predict the photograph to which it is being applied. Exposure, white balance, available light and the colors already present will always influence the result.

This is why we regard presets as starting points. Apply the look, make the necessary technical corrections and then adjust the intensity and color according to the image.

The final photograph should still belong to you.
